Fire Craft

Primitive Fire Making

From the earliest days of mankind, the ability to make and control fire has separated man from beast. Fire brings light into the darkness. It protects from predators. Fire helps us to purify water, cook our food, and provides warmth against the cold. Fire is a tool, it's medicine, it's entertainment and the list goes on...

Most people will tell you they can make a fire but the reality is that most people in modern society will default to using copious amounts of lighter fluid and a store-bought lighter. My question to you is this. Can you make a fire without those things? How confident are you that you can build a fire in the rain to help your situation? If there is any doubt in your mind about your ability to get a fire going then you need to take our class before you go into the backcountry.

Our fire-making clinic begins with the basics. You will learn the fundamental ingredients of fire, the most effective methods for starting and maintaining it, and then progress into other traditional skills like how to transport your fire and the ancient art of the bow drill.

Kodiak Survival School will provide the raw materials for our fire clinic but we encourage you to bring your fire starters. If you're a more advanced student bring your favorite friction fire handhold to the class to practice with. Please be sure to show your gear to your instructor before the clinic begins to ensure it's safe for use during the practical exercise

In our fire-making clinic, we will cover the following and more:

  • Building blocks of fire
  • Tinder and where to find it
  • Natural accelerants
  • Various types of fire. (Cooking, Signal, Dakota Hole, Etc.)
  • Reflecting walls and construction
  • Survival Kit items
  • Types of wood and uses
  • Bow Drill
  • Improvised fire starters
